The Trip That Started It All

Honolulu 2017

What compels someone to spend copious amounts of time to start a blog, you may ask? For us it’s a way to give back to the world while getting back to the basics. Time with family. You’ll learn more in the coming days about our perspective on the loyalty we have to those around us, but first we’ll travel to the place where the axis of our lives tipped.

Honolulu 2017. Waikiki beach to be exact. A long way from the Emerald City, where we’ve been having an extra wet and dreary winter even by our standards. 2016 held no vacations and after a long winter of work we’d had it. Time to escape!

As chronic over packers we had mostly filled the maximum amount of luggage with just enough room to bring back treasures from the Ilsand. We had an easy trip and got settled and down to the beach as quickly as possible. My daughter has loved the beach since she was a baby, often crying “Beach, beach!” when she wanted to go. And the beautiful sand at Waikiki was the best I’ve ever seen. The water was as warm and soft as the evening air. Only mildly salty, like a healing epsom salt bath and unlike most of the harsh pool or cold ocean water I’d experienced before.

I expected a relaxing vacation, but the change in my body and mind were more than I could have imagined. The warm 70 degree nights meant that my muscles never got cold and tight. The sound of Waikiki waves were medetative and uninturrupted as there were no seagulls to peirce the air with noise. Even on the weekend with the city abuzz with people from around the world there was a relaxed island vibe. All fun and no stress. I could get used to this- for the rest of my life!

I can’t even describe how much I wanted to disappear and “miss” our flight home. I realized after those few days how backwards my priorities had gotten. Although life on the island may not be in the immediate future, it is now a long term goal. And loving a life with my family has become the central focus.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure. Aloha!

    1. Hi Lynn,

I haven’t been to San Diego yet, but it’s on my bucket list. The Mexican Riviera cruises all leave from San Diego so hopefully sooner rather than later! We’ve finally got a lot of flowers blooming here in the Northwest, perfect time for gardening 🙂
